Connecting with an API Key

If you use claude.ai or ChatGPT, you can skip this page.
Those two only need the address plus a sign-in, so no API key is involved. See Connecting to Claude or Connecting to ChatGPT.

This page is for people using tools that are configured by editing a settings file directly, such as Claude Desktop.

Issuing an API key​

  1. In Antpocket on the web, go to Members & Permissions. It is Members & Permissions in the sidebar.

  2. At the bottom of the page, in the API Key area, click Create.

  1. The Issue API Key dialog opens.

    • Name (label, optional) — note what the key is for so you can recognize it later. (e.g. Claude Desktop on laptop)
    • Permissions — choose what to grant. Permissions and Managing Connections explains each one.

  2. Click Issue.

  1. The API Key info dialog shows the key. Click Copy to clipboard and store it somewhere safe.
This is the only time you can see the key

The issued API key can't be viewed again. Copy it somewhere safe.
After you close the dialog, the list only shows a masked version. If you lose it, delete the key and issue a new one.

Rules for issuing
  • You can only grant permissions you hold in that space.
  • Up to five keys per user per space.
  • Keys do not expire. Delete the ones you no longer use.

Entering the connection details in your tool​

Your tool needs two values.

Connection address

Authentication header

apikey: Bearer sk_live_your_key_here
Don't drop the Bearer prefix

The header value must start with Bearer (Bearer followed by one space).
Without it, the beginning of your key is cut off and authentication fails.

Antpocket uses the standard protocol, so in your tool's documentation look for where to enter a "remote server URL" and a "request header", and put the two values above there.

The connection works only within the permissions on that key, and only with the single space the key belongs to — the same as a claude.ai or ChatGPT connection.

Deleting a key​

In the API Key list on the Members & Permissions page, click Delete on the key.
Any tool using that key is disconnected immediately.

You can delete keys you issued yourself, and if you are the space owner, keys issued by other members as well.
When a member leaves or is removed from the space, the keys they issued are deleted automatically.

Changing a key

To change permissions or rotate a key, delete the old one, issue a new one and update the header value in your tool's settings.
The permissions on an issued key cannot be edited afterwards.
